Better Than Perfect

This week a client and I were discussing the results from a quiz I'd emailed her, which ranks your top saboteurs.

She seemed a little stressed as she shared her results with me and asked,

"How do I get rid of them?"

To which I replied, "You don't.

In fact, they will always be with you."

I could tell she felt a little perplexed.

Here’s the deal.

We think that "fixing" and making things "perfect" is an honorable and achievable goal.

We believe that if we are more "perfect" we will feel better and avoid extra pain and suffering.

We believe if we are more "perfect" it makes us more lovable and acceptable.

These are lies.

They are simply not true.

What if I told you that the best and easiest way to perfecting ourselves is through accepting what is?

What if the goal is not to annihilate our weaknesses and shortcomings, but to embrace them in order to gain greater understanding of ourselves and our behaviors?

Self-compassion and self-acceptance naturally facilitate the changes we want to make.

Sounds a little crazy, right?

Here’s the deal, perfection is an impossible goal.

Yes, we desire to perfect ourselves, but we will never attain total perfection.

And let’s go to a magical universe where perfection is possible, life will still have painful and uncomfortable emotions.

We cannot be perfect enough to avoid pain, shame, humiliation, rejection etc. etc.

So, what is better than perfect?

Learning to feel and process our true emotions.

Practicing loving ourselves as we are right now, just as we are.

As we get better at accepting and feeling any and all our emotions,

We FEEL BETTER and live happier and healthier lives.
