I certified in the Root Cause Protocol back in 2017. I found it while I was seeking to understand how the body actually heals, and it made sense to me that there would be some kind of order to that. We're each unique, and we need different things at different times. But underneath that, there's a foundational way the body works, and I've seen it play out again and again with the people I work with.
The body knows how to heal when it has what it needs.
These teachings are some of the most sensible, simple ones I've come across, which is probably why they've stuck with me for almost a decade. I love using my IQS to actually test and find which of these things a person needs most, rather than guessing, and over the years, it's changed how I think about nervous system support at the cellular level.
Here's the short version: when you're under stress (and almost everyone I work with is), your body burns through magnesium fast. And as magnesium drops, it throws off how your body handles other minerals, especially copper and iron. The end result is your cells have a harder time actually making energy. So you feel depleted, wired-but-tired, foggy, even when you're "doing everything right."
This isn't separate from the nervous system work I do. It's the same conversation, just at the level of cells and minerals instead of patterns and beliefs. Both matter.
So today I want to share the handful of things I take myself and recommend most often. Nothing complicated. Just the basics that make a real difference.
**Magnesium — and why the form matters**
Most people are low in magnesium and don't know it. It's one of the first things your body burns through under stress, and it's involved in hundreds of processes: energy production, muscle relaxation, sleep, mood regulation. If you're tense, wired, achy, or not sleeping well, magnesium is often part of the picture.
But not all magnesium is created equal, and this is where I see people get it wrong a lot.
Magnesium citrate is everywhere because it's cheap to produce, but it works primarily as a laxative. It pulls water into the intestines, which is why it "works" - but a lot of it leaves your body before it ever gets used at the cellular level. If you're taking citrate hoping to replenish your magnesium stores, you may be getting much less benefit than you think (and more bathroom trips than you bargained for).
Magnesium glycinate is the form I recommend instead. It's bound to glycine, an amino acid, which makes it gentle on digestion and well-absorbed, meaning more of it actually gets where it needs to go. It's a good everyday choice for stress, sleep, and overall nervous system support.
(There are other forms too, magnesium malate, taurate, and threonate each have their own specific uses, but if you're just starting out and want one solid everyday option, glycinate is where I'd point you.)
**The Adrenal Cocktail**
This is a simple mineral drink, whole-food vitamin C, potassium, and a little sea salt, that supports your adrenals and helps your body actually use the magnesium you're taking. You can make this at home, or get it premade as a powder or capsules.
**Whole Food Vitamin C**
Not ascorbic acid; that's a synthetic, isolated piece of the vitamin C complex. Whole food vitamin C includes tyrosinase and the other cofactors that make it actually work the way vitamin C is supposed to in your body.
**ConcenTrace Minerals**
A simple way to remineralize- drops you add to water. Especially helpful if you're drinking a lot of filtered or reverse osmosis water, which strips minerals out.
**Cod Liver Oil (Rosita) and Beef Liver (Smidge or Perfect)**
If supplements had a luxury tier, Rosita cod liver oil would be it. It's the highest quality I've found. Cod liver oil and beef liver both support copper utilization, which is part of what helps your body actually use minerals and make energy efficiently.

I put together a simple list on Fullscript with all of these so you don't have to go hunting: FULLSCRIPT LINK look for "Walton Wellness Dispensary Collections" in the left-hand panel, then "Root Cause Protocol."
Once you're in there, you can add anything else you already take from the same dispensary — other supplements, sports nutrition, personal care items - all shipped together with one shipping cost. When you create your account, I'll get notified and set up your ongoing 20% discount on everything in your cart.
(General information based on what I've learned and use in my own life, not medical advice. If you're on medications or have a health condition, check with your doctor before adding something new.)
Take care of your minerals. Your nervous system will thank you.
