How I Stopped Having Migraines by Talking to My Stress (Yes, Really)

When I was eight years old, I started having migraines. They always followed a pattern: first numbness in a finger or tongue, then blurred vision, and then—the dreaded pain.

It kept happening for years. I braced for them. Hated them. Tried to push them away.

And then, in my 20s, I tried something different.

I sat with the sensations.

Instead of resisting, I noticed what was happening in my body. I got curious.

👉 What color is this sensation?
👉 Is it heavy or light?
👉 If it could talk, what would it say?

I let the images unfold. I breathed with it instead of against it. And something amazing happened:

The migraine never came.

And in the 35 years since, I’ve only had 2–3 mild ones.

What shifted?

My relationship to the sensation. By turning toward the discomfort with curiosity, instead of fear, I gave my body permission to process and release.

This is one of the tools I teach clients every week: how to use metaphor to access emotion stored in the body. Because stress, anxiety, and pain aren’t just in the mind—they’re in your tissues.

🌀 This week, try it for yourself. Find a place of tightness or discomfort and ask:

  • What color is it?

  • Is it fast or slow?

  • What message might it hold?

Your body speaks in symbols. You just have to listen.

You don’t have to figure it out alone.
