When Your Body Speaks, What Does It Say?

Have you ever felt stuck with a physical symptom that just won’t go away?

A client recently came to me with persistent wrist pain. Years earlier, she’d injured it doing a handspring. Despite treatments like a cortisol shot, the discomfort lingered.

When we explored her wrist through metaphoric processing, she described it as feeling trapped in a tiny jail with bars. Her wrist "told" her: "I feel stuck. I feel like I can’t progress, and I feel left behind."

The wrist felt lonely, watching the rest of her body move forward. When I asked her what the wrist needed, she said, "It needs a key, and it needs ballet slipper pink—a soft, comforting color—to feel free again." I told her to imagine the key doing what it needed to do, and imagining this ballet slipper color. Almost immediately she started to notice change, and when I reached out to her a few days later, she told me that her wrist was feeling much happier.

This process works because your body holds wisdom. Physical symptoms are often tied to unprocessed emotions or beliefs. When we give those sensations a voice, powerful shifts can happen.

3 Principles of Metaphoric Processing:

  1. Your Body Knows the Story: Physical discomfort often reflects emotional states or unresolved feelings.
  2. Visualization Unlocks Healing: By describing your pain in metaphors, you connect to your subconscious and uncover what’s needed to move forward.
  3. Change Takes Time: Even small visual shifts can have a big impact—but lasting change happens gradually as the body integrates new emotions and beliefs.

Have you ever wondered what your own physical symptoms might say if they could talk? Let’s find out together.
