The Resentment Bucket โ€” A Simple Daily Practice for Letting Go

Resentment is heavy. When there's nowhere to put it, we carry it everywhere: into conversations, into our sleep, and into the way we react to people who had nothing to do with it.

One of my clients found a beautifully simple answer. She calls it her bucket.

Where it started

In my Inner Listening Circle, a small group program built on Focusing and the Felt Sense Polyvagal Model, I led a clearing space session. Clearing space is the practice of noticing what's taking up room inside you and gently setting each thing outside of you, not solving it and not fighting it, so there's space to hear yourself again.

Nicole, a client of mine, who is now on her second round of the circle, took that idea home and made it physical.

The practice

  • A container holds what's heavy. Each resentment, frustration, or hard situation gets written down and placed in the bucket.
  • She visits it twice a day. Morning and evening, she takes each item out and prays over it by name, whether it's a person or a situation.
  • The rest of the day, it stays there. She doesn't have to carry it, rehearse it, or solve it. It has a place.

What happened

When Nicole recently came to me for support with a difficult situation, the difference was obvious. She was calm and clear. She knew what she wanted to do. She is less reactive and more confident in her choices, and it shows.

Why it works

Your nervous system learns through repetition and experience, not just insight. When heavy things have a consistent, dependable place to go, your body can stop bracing for them all day. A physical container also gives the mind something concrete. The act of putting it in and taking it out tells your body that this is being held, just not by you right now.

Praying or holding each item by name matters too. It's attention with compassion, which is very different from rumination.

Try it yourself

  1. Choose a container you like: a bucket, jar, or box.
  2. Write down one heavy thing and put it in.
  3. Morning and evening, take each item out. Pray over it or hold it with kindness for a moment.
  4. Return it to the container and let it rest there until the next visit.
  5. After a week or two, notice what's changed in your reactions, your sleep, and your clarity.

Small, intentional efforts work. They just need to be repeated.
