What You May Not Know About Stress and Sleep

Stress is part of normal daily life. It's not a problem, unless we let it build up throughout the day. 

Imagine starting each day with a deflated balloon. 

And each time you experience stress you blow that stress into the balloon and inflate it a little bit more. 

You tie off the balloon but continue to open it and add each stress that comes along throughout your day. 

By the end of your day, your balloon is full. 

As you near the end of your day, you start to unwind and prepare for bed. 

Only to have all the stress you've not processed during the day greet you.  

This becomes part of what you associate (consciously or unconsciously), with going to sleep.  

Your mind won't shut off. 

Your thoughts are focused on unpleasant things. 

Replaying what happened or didn't happen. 

Blaming yourself or someone else. 

Thinking about how things should be different than they are. 

Ruminating on the past or the future. 

Feeling all the unpleasant feelings that you didn't process during the day. 

BUT.... 

What would it be like if you experienced and released the stress throughout your day, rather than letting it build up? 

Imagine now blowing your stressors into the same balloon, but this time you name and accept what you are feeling and experiencing at that moment. 

Then don't tie the balloon off. Let the air come back out gently. 

And the pressure doesn't build throughout the day. 

You get to the end of your day and start to relax and unwind and it's easy. 

There's nothing you've put off that is waiting for you at the end of your day. 

You're feeling relaxed. 

You're thinking thoughts of gratitude. 

You're feeling at peace.  

You know that you can manage whatever comes your way in the moment, which keeps you in the present moment. 

You're at peace with how you managed your day.  

Confident you'll manage tomorrow as it comes.  

There are wonderful tools you can use to release stress throughout your day.
