Your Goals Aren't That Important

I was chatting with my sister about how she's been feeling stressed lately due to the disorganization of her house.

She mentioned that she feels much calmer and less reactive when her house is organized.

But with three kids and a husband, it can become disorganized pretty quickly, and we humans don't always want to clean up the mess right away.

My sister expressed her desire to change this and asked for my help.

So, I suggested a reframe, emphasizing that lasting change takes time and consistent effort.

We shifted our focus onto the processes that would help keep her house in shape, starting with tiny habits that she and her family could implement one at a time.

When I asked her what the next smallest step towards keeping her space more organized might be, she quickly found the answer: putting a few things away each time she got up from the couch.

We agreed that starting with one simple next step would get the ball rolling and shift her into empowerment, making it easier to solve the obstacles in her way.

By emphasizing the process that helps keep her house more organized, she became way less frustrated and much more effective, no longer a victim of the messes in her home.

Once she establishes this habit, she can add another small habit and find satisfaction in creating processes for her and her family that help them enjoy their space and time together.
